The Rock (old prisons)
Built on a hill, the prison compound is made up of a terrace of buildings built around a courtyard.
The buildings have a medieval structure: they were, in fact, dwellings that were incorporated during the construction of the fortress and later adapted to meet defensive requirements. Due to their strategic position and the difficulty of being stormed in the case of a siege they took on the function of citadel, that is, the place of maximum security within the fortification.
In the 19th century, the compound became the Garfagnana civil prison, from which it gets its present name; it maintained this function until the beginning of the following century when the buildings became peasant dwellings
