The Garfagnana has been, from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century, a strategic point and the centre of complex political events involving the neighboring domains: Florence, Pisa, Lucca, the Malaspina and the Este. In this beautiful area, towers, castles, strongholds and fortresses draw the top of the hills forming part of the landscape of the Serchio Valley.
The Centro di Documentazione delle Fortificazioni della Garfagnana illustrates their development, while the Centro di Tradizioni Popolari makes available to the publicmany documents about culture and folklore.
Informations and studies on the flora, fauna, environment and renewable energy are offered through workshops.
The Fortress of Mont'Alfonso is also a campus for postgraduate courses and masters.
